The word bangle comes from the Hindi bangri, a ring of glass worn around the arm.
The word bangle comes from the Hindi bangri, a ring of glass worn around the arm.
Like the glass ring it is named after, a bangle is rigid rather than flexible, so it usually slips over the hand, or opens on a hinge and closes with a clasp. Wearing several at once is an old custom, recorded in early Indian jewellery.
The collection includes designs for women and men, from plain, polished and twisted bangles to hinged ones and others set with cubic zirconia or crystal. Many are sterling silver, some of them gold-plated. There are also copper bangles set with magnets, and others in stainless steel, some of them gold-tone.
