The Best Earring Backs (That Actually Stay On)

Have you ever realised an earring back has slipped off — only after you’ve already lost the earring?

It’s one of those quietly heartbreaking moments, especially when it’s a favourite pair. And the frustrating thing is: it’s completely preventable.

The secret isn’t just any earring back — it’s choosing one designed to stay put.

As jewellers, and as women who wear earrings every day, we’ve spoken to countless customers about this very problem. Over the years, two standout solutions consistently come out on top.

If you’re looking for:

  • secure earring backs that don’t fall off

  • earring backs for diamond studs

  • earring backs for sensitive ears

  • earring backs for children or heavy earrings

…you’re in the right place. If you're interested in the different types of earring backs available you can read our article here.

So, What Are the Best Earring Backs?

For standard butterfly backs, the issue is simple: they’re designed to flex, which makes them convenient — but also easy to loosen over time.

Today, there are modern, extra-secure earring backs that solve this problem beautifully.

The two we recommend most are:

  • LOX Earring Backs (silver or gold tone)

  • Chrysmela Catch Earring Backs

We genuinely believe every woman should own at least one pair of these.

Why It’s Worth Investing in Secure Earring Backs

When you add up:

  • the cost of replacing lost earrings

  • buying endless spare backs

  • and the emotional sting of losing something you love

…a one-off investment makes a lot of sense.

At the time of writing:

  • LOX cost around £12 per pair

  • Chrysmela cost around £50–£55 per pair

Neither can promise you’ll never lose an earring again — but they’re about as close as it gets.

LOX Earring Backs

LOX were invented by a medical engineer after his wife lost an earring — and they’re brilliantly designed.

I’ve personally used LOX for over five years on my diamond stud earrings, and now use them on almost all my studs. They’re interchangeable, discreet, and extremely secure.

Why We Love LOX

  • Incredibly secure (mine have never come off accidentally)

  • Easy to put on and remove

  • Interchangeable between earrings

  • Hypoallergenic plastic against the skin

  • Suitable for studs and hook earrings

  • Available in gold-tone or silver-tone

They’ve even been tested during manufacture to hold the weight of a brick without slipping.

To use them, simply slide the back onto the post until comfortable.
To remove, gently squeeze the small flexible levers and it releases instantly.

Great for Sensitive Ears & Children

Because only hypoallergenic plastic touches the skin, LOX are excellent for sensitive ears.

They’re also one of the best earring backs for children (with the usual small-part safety guidance). Children’s earrings rarely come with secure backs — LOX solve that problem easily and fit standard posts.

A Brilliant Gift Idea

LOX also make a thoughtful, affordable gift — perfect for birthdays, Christmas, or Secret Santa. Many people don’t realise they need them… until they try them.

The Only Downside

LOX can slightly mark softer gold posts over time if slid repeatedly along the stem. With higher-carat gold, this can eventually cause wear.

A simple workaround is to squeeze the levers slightly while positioning the back, rather than sliding it all the way along the post.

Chrysmela Catch Earring Backs

Chrysmela catch earring backs

Chrysmela describe their design as “the most secure earring back ever” — and they’re impressively engineered.

Inside each back are three micro ball-bearings that automatically adjust to grip and lock onto the post. To release, you gently pull back the end plate.

Key Features

  • Fits posts from 0.6mm–1.1mm

  • Hypoallergenic

  • Plated in platinum, 24k gold, or rose gold

  • Inner components made from surgical steel

  • Also available in versions designed for heavy earrings

They’re more expensive than LOX, but beautifully finished and very secure. While we’ve tested LOX for longer, Chrysmela have an excellent reputation and premium feel.

Other Secure Earring Back Options

La Pousette Earring Backs

These use a spring mechanism and hold earrings securely once you get used to them. They can feel slightly fiddly at first, so we don’t usually recommend them for children.

Screw-Back Earrings

Traditionally used for diamond studs, screw backs are extremely secure — but less practical today. They require threaded posts, and replacements can be difficult to match if a back is lost.

In Summary

If you regularly wear earrings — especially studs — secure earring backs are one of the best jewellery investments you can make.

We recommend:

  • LOX for everyday wear, children, sensitive ears and value

  • Chrysmela for premium materials and maximum security

They offer peace of mind, protect your favourite earrings, and save money in the long run.

If you try any of these, I’d love to hear how you get on — feedback (good or bad) really helps us continue recommending the best solutions to our customers.
