Watch Battery Replacement – Carathea & Jools, Bridgwater

How Do You Know If Your Watch Needs a New Battery?

Is your watch stopping unexpectedly, losing time, or running intermittently? These are classic signs that your battery may be running low.

Some watches even give you a warning: the second-hand may jump in five-second intervals when the battery is nearly flat.

Bring your watch to your local jeweller to test the battery—they can check if it’s low, borderline, or completely flat.

Important Things to Know About Watch Battery Replacement

1. Water Resistance

Opening the back of a watch can affect its water resistance. Even if the seal is replaced, water resistance is not guaranteed.

If you need full water resistance, ask about a pressure test, which costs around £45 and ensures your watch is sealed to the manufacturer’s specifications.

2. How Long Will a Battery Last?

A new battery typically lasts 1–2 years, depending on the watch and its features. Watches with chronographs, lights, or multiple functions may drain batteries faster.

We use top-quality Renata batteries, which last longer than generic low-cost alternatives.

3. Multi-Battery Watches

Some watches, like certain Fossil models with both digital and analogue functions, may require two batteries—one for the timekeeping, one for extra functions.

4. DIY Replacement Can Be Risky

Removing the back or battery yourself can damage delicate parts. Casio watches, for example, often have batteries tucked under other components.

If you’ve already attempted a replacement, keep the original battery and bring it to a jeweller for safe installation.

5. Watch Glass and Back

Even small cracks or scratches in the glass can worsen during a battery replacement.
Replacing the back requires care—some watches “click” back easily, others need specialist clamps to avoid bending the case.

6. Watch Battery Sizes

There are over 40 different battery sizes, each with a unique code. Not every battery fits every watch, so professional fitting ensures the correct size and proper function.

What If My Watch Still Doesn’t Work?

If a watch doesn’t run after a new battery, we check the battery and clean the contacts. Sometimes debris or worn seals prevent proper function.

If further work is needed, we offer a Clean and Overhaul starting from £30. You can decide whether to proceed after a quote.
