Gemstone & Jewellery Cleaning Guide

Have you ever wondered how to clean a treasured piece of jewellery with a particular gemstone but fear damaging it?

If so, please subscribe to our newsletter and you will receive our FREE 13-page Gemstone and Jewellery Cleaning Guide as soon as you sign up.

We cover the best way to clean 24 gemstones from Amber to Zircon, including items without stones in various metals like silver, gold and platinum. We also include how to clean a Pandora bracelet and how to care for marcasite jewellery.

Whilst it won't take the place of professional advice from a jeweller who can see your jewellery in person, it's a guide which will give you some guidelines to use, it will explain the relative hardness of each gemstone so you will know the ones to be careful of cleaning yourself.

We show you how to clean your jewellery at home using simple household items of jewellery cleaning products like those shown below.

It is important to keep your jewellery clean. Not only does it help the light to refract on the gemstone surfaces (which it can't do as well if the stone has a film of debris on the surface), but also for hygiene reasons.

During the Covid period, several studies looked at the bacteria on our jewellery - particularly rings - and found them to be teaming with unwanted bacteria (see our blog article here for more information).

If your gemstones are clean, you can more easily see any damage—cracks and chips will be more apparent, as will damaged claws that, if unnoticed, could lead to a stone's loss.
